For the first time in years, comprehensive immigration reform is possible. Thanks to the bipartisan “Gang of Eight”, Congress is considering a bill that would increase border security, reform our immigration system, and offer a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants already living and working here, but relegated to living in the shadows. This is an historic opportunity to strengthen our economy and meet our biblical obligation to remember that we were strangers too.
None of this can happen without Congressional fortitude and the support of constituents. Please take a moment to thank the “Gang of Eight” – Senators Schumer (D-NY), McCain (R-AZ), Durbin (D-IL), Graham (R-SC), Menendez (D-NJ), Rubio (R-FL), Bennet (D-CO), and Flake (R-AZ) – for reaching a bipartisan compromise on fixing our nation’s broken immigration system. This was surely no easy feat, and the fight is far from over.
If your Senators are not one of the Gang of Eight, it is important to let them know you support comprehensive immigration reform. In a recent op-ed, Avi Poster, a lay leader from Nashville, did just that, urging Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker to “not only support the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act put forth by the “Gang of Eight,” but join the authors in leading the way to its passage.”
